Like a lot of the songs on the album, politics are worn plainly on sleeves, but this one drives forward really nicely, with the twin guitar work of Franz Stahl and Robert Lee Davidson propelling the track with some impressive aggression. From there we move on into Something In My Head, another straight forward hardcore track. There’s a big Bad Brains influence running throughout the entire album, with a bit more straight ahead rock thrown into the proceedings. The opening track, one of the best on the album, we’re in pretty familiar eighties hardcore territory. From the opening reverb that sets off Take It From The Top, the new mix is clean, clear and powerful without sounding too modern. Politics aside, how does the album sound? Really strong. Why release it now? Well, according to vocalist Pete Stahl, these songs were original recorded at the height of Ronald Reagan’s time in the Oval Office – a lot of what the band was singing about back in 1988 seems relevant again today. This was the band’s fourth album, but the first to feature a pre-Nirvana Grohl behind the drum kit. Remastered from the original tapes and remixed at Dave Grohl’s own 606 Studios, this reissue also completely redoes the packaging and comes complete with a bunch of archival photos, lyrics and personal writing from the band (or at least it’s supposed to – this review is based off of an MP3 download that didn’t include any of that neat stuff).
